How to swap a trailer hitch
Properly hooking up a trailer ensures safety, security, and legality. Failing to follow the correct procedure can lead to unsafe situations. Below, we will guide you through the steps to connect a trailer correctly.
How to hook up a trailer
When hitching a trailer, you need to be careful to follow each step correctly. To make things easy, we’ve broken it down into eight simple steps:
- Begin by reversing the trailer to the tow hitch. Make sure the trailer coupling is above the vehicle hitch by using the jockey wheel to raise it if necessary.
- Now reverse the vehicle underneath the trailer coupling.
- Release the thumb lock and lift the handle on the trailer coupling. With your other hand, lower the coupling onto the vehicle hitch.
- Release the handle and ensure the coupling lock is engaged, then raise and secure the jockey wheel.
- Fit the breakaway cable onto the vehicle.
- Now connect the lighting cable.
- Check that the lights work.
- You’re set to go!
