Looking to get started with renewable diesel? Renewable diesel is a sustainable, low carbon biofuel that derives from waste products and other biomass, which can reduce emissions by 85%. It is a direct drop-in alternative for fossil fuel and can be safely stored in all Western Global storage tanks.

THE BENEFITS OF RENEWABLE DIESEL

Renewable diesel has a number of benefits over mineral diesel, kerosene and first-generation biofuels. In addition to its environmental benefits, renewable diesel has a long storage life of up to 10 years and a lower freeze point (-40ºF) than diesel (14ºF).

For most applications, renewable diesel is completely interchangeable with diesel and can be blended in any ratio. If your OEM has approved the fuel, then there is no risk of voiding your warranty.

Renewable diesel’s clean burning properties reduce particulate production, which helps improve engine cleanliness and prolong machinery lifetime.

How’s it made?

Renewable diesel is made by treating oils with hydrogen. It can be produced using a variety of feedstocks, including vegetable oils like soy and rapeseed, or waste fats such as animal fats or cooking oils.

The production process involves saturating feedstocks with hydrogen at temperatures above 572ºF. The final process is isomerization, which results in a fuel almost chemically identical to mineral diesel, but with additional benefits.

STORAGE REGS

In the U.S., there are no specific regulations for renewable diesel. It follows the same regulations as regular oils such as diesel, kerosene, and blends.

Oil storage regulations vary depending on location and use of the tank, but typically require a UL Listed tank and a form of secondary containment. All Western Global tanks are both UL Listed and of double wall construction meaning the secondary containment is built into the tank.

Next Gen Biofuel

Biodiesel is a first-generation biofuel made from fresh, organic matter. It is not a direct drop-in replacement for mineral diesel and is susceptible to oxidization and diesel bug. It is also known to ‘gloop’ at low temperatures, due to its chemical composition.

Renewable diesel is a second-generation biofuel, which has more similar properties to mineral diesel compared to biodiesel.

STORING HVO IN YOUR WESTERN TANK

All Western Global tanks are designed to store HVO and other biofuels. Our standard tanks range from 1,000 litres to 100,000 litres – and with lockable equipment cabinets and lifespans of over 10 years, they are the #1 way to store your fuel securely.

Our pumps are all suitable for HVO as well. Please check with us whether your chosen pump package is also capable of working with first-generation biodiesel.

How TO maintain YOUR fuel tank

All Western Global tanks are designed to be easily maintained with removable inner tanks or inspection hatches. We recommend regular inspections, including:

  • Check and replace filters where installed
  • Visual inspection for evidence of corrosion or damage
  • Check the bund for water, product or debris
  • Ensure venting devices are operational and free from obstruction

Reducing your emissions

Renewable diesel can reduce carbon emissions by up to 85%, but this will vary depending on the feedstock used to make the fuel. Due to its clear burning properties, renewable diesel also reduces particle emissions by up to 50%, helping to improve local air quality.

When you store your renewable diesel in a Western Global fuel tank, you can reduce the number of deliveries to your site, which also means lower emissions from transport. Using an on-site storage tank with a fuel management system allows you to track fuel usage and receive regular updates live or via email, delivering accountability for every drop of fuel.
