Fuel Tank Storage Tips

Food for thought: on average six 500 gallon tanks can take up 1,560 sq. ft. of space in your yard!

Without a well thought out storage plan, both the size of your fleet and your ability to maneuver tanks effectively, can be limited. Here are some tips to help make your storage facility more efficient.

MAKE A PLAN

Look around your storage facility. Is there a designated place for each piece of equipment? Taking the time to analyze the best place to store each piece is the first step to making your space more efficient. Organizing your equipment makes it easier to find and access it when it’s needed, saving you time in your everyday operations.

STACK WHEN POSSIBLE

500 gallon to 1,000 gallon tanks can take up some serious space in your storage facility or yard. Round tanks are not engineered to be stacked, and if stacked, they could cause potential safety hazards. Although stacking systems can be built, the materials and time spent to build such a system is not cost effective. Investing in cube-shaped storage tanks that can be stacked will significantly increase your remaining storage space for additional tanks in your fleet or other stock.

KEEP IT CLEAN & ORGANIZED

Keeping your yard or storage facility clean and organized should be a top priority to ensure staff safety and to avoid potential hazards. For outdoor storage, it’s important that weeds and vegetation are trimmed or removed, as they can accelerate rusting and disguise leaks if any fuel is still present. Keeping tanks under cover will also eliminate the need to check and empty rainwater that has accumulated in any tanks or containment pans or berms.
