Clean Fuel on Offshore Rig

Clean Fuel on Offshore Rig

Identify a reliable fuel storage solution for offshore use.

CHALLENGE

On the customer’s offshore rigs, their machinery was powered by the fuel stored in large tanks built into the rig platform. The engines on the drilling rigs had substantial water and particle filtration because the fuel in the on board tanks was easily subjected to contamination. When the customer brought equipment on board the rig that had smaller engines and not such a robust filtration system, it resulted in maintenance issues. Contaminated fuel caused 50% of all their engine failures worldwide.

SOLUTION

Understanding the importance of filtration, Western configured its TransCube Offshore series fuel tank with a diaphragm pump, a dual Racor filtration system and a hose reel. This setup enabled the customer to transfer and filter fuel from the built-in rig tanks and supply it to the applicable onboard machinery. The TransCube Offshore series was ideal for the customer’s application due to its DNV2.7-1, EN12079 and a UN IBC approved design.

RESULTS

With the newly deployed tanks and filtration configuration, the customer will ultimately see a significant reduction in the number of engine failures due to bad/contaminated fuel and save money by reducing maintenance and servicing costs. The approvals and transportable design of the TransCube also allow the customer to easily transport the tanks around the rig full of fuel to fill dispersed machinery and equipment.
